THE FUTURE
So what does the future hold for this fantastic series? It has been by far the most successful Alternate Universe in the Gundam saga, and is responsible of drawing a whole new legion of Gundam fans. The shift away from the traditional realistic, dramatic and intense atmosphere of the original Gundam series (eg Zeta-Gundam and Perfect One Year War) towards over the top aesthetics, "pretty boys" image and more "pleasant" approach has both good and bad points.
Gundam Wing appears to target a more broader audience, the shift towards aesthetics over realism is to appeal to the younger generation, and the "pretty boys" and the "pleasantness" of the series is obviously aimed at females. There is no doubt that Gundam Wing is responsible for drawing a colossal amount of female fans to the Gundam genre, and the extent to which they protect their favourite "Gundam Boys" is quite ridiculous sometimes. Nevertheless, the producers has created an enormously successful series that has present Gundam to a newer generation of fans.
Some traditional Gundam fans scorned at these Alternate Universes of Gundam, claiming that they are a bad "rip off" of the original series. But let's not be too hypercritical about them..... Gundam Wing is by far the best Alternate Universe in the Gundam saga and is better than many of the series on the original Universal Century. I'm quite confident that Gundam Wing is better than ZZ-Gundam, Victory Gundam, 0080,...... but of course, if you are after the best Gundam series ever made, look no further than Zeta-Gundam, Gundam: Perfect One Year War, 0083 and Char's Counter-attack.... they are all classics.
Of course, let's not talk about the pathetic G-Gundam, and the latest disaster, Turn-A Gundam. (What's the deal with the mustache!?)
So to my PERSONAL thoughts about this anime. As most of you would have gathered by now, I am a devoted Gundam fan of the original series, especially Zeta-Gundam. Initially, when I first heard about Gundam Wing, I didn't know it was set in an Alternate Universe, but it later became apparent. Although Gundam Wing is quite a contrast to the intense and traumatic dramas of Zeta-Gundam and Perfect One Year War, it is still a highly enjoyable anime. Gundam Wing will prove to be a good stepping stone for those who are new to the Gundam series, although it is quite hard now to find copies of the old Gundam series..... But it will be wrong for me to say that I didn't like Gundam Wing, (I made an entire website about it!), I truely believe that Gundam Wing is the second best anime that I have ever seen! The first is undoubtely Zeta-Gundam, but why didn't I make a website on ZETA insteard I hear you ask? To be frank, Gundam Wing is the most popular Gundam series ever made, and has an IMMENSE female following (something unheard of before in an Gundam series). I'm not being prejucdice, but that's quite an achievement! Thus, Gundam Wing will continue to be the most popular, yet I feel that we'll never have anymore intense and traumatic animes like Zeta-Gundam (what a tragic ending it was....) simply because that market is not big enough anymore... (that's capitalism for you).... instead, we'll see a bigger shift towards over-the-top MS's, more "pretty boy" stuff and "everyone lives happily ever after" simply because that's what sells at the moment.
Finally, for all those of you that hunger for even more Gundam Wing, you can forget it. Endless Waltz is as much as you'll get, and the After Colony Era does not have the background and politics of the Universal Century Era to expand into a long epic. There's not enough politcal fractions and organizations in the After Colony Era to make more out of it, and unlike the Gundams in UC which weren't "indestructable", the forces are too unbalanced. In UC, the Gundams are part of teams, and they aren't invincible! Further, enemy forces also have elite pilots with powerful MS's that matches the other Gundams, giving very even and balanced contests, and ensuring long, continual struggles. Conversely, the Gundams in AC are too powerful compared to the others, destroying over 100 enemy MS's with 5 Gundams? That's too far-fetched. And the only good pilot that the enemy had, ONE, and that was simply Zechs. Thus, I have pointed my opinions on Gundam Wing, and any feedback is welcomed.
